How to get review notes into DaVinci Resolve as timeline markers

Resolve reads timeline markers from an EDL. That makes it the easiest editor to move notes into: one file, one menu, and every note sits on the timeline at its frame.

In short

  • Export the notes as DaVinci Resolve (EDL), usually starting at 01:00:00:00.
  • In the Media Pool, right-click the timeline > Timelines > Import > Timeline Markers from EDL.
  • Turn markers green when done, export them as an EDL and import them back to tick the notes off.

Export and import

  1. 1On post-prod.io, Export > DaVinci Resolve (EDL), with the timecode your timeline starts at (usually 01:00:00:00).
  2. 2In Resolve's Media Pool, right-click the timeline > Timelines > Import > Timeline Markers from EDL, and pick the file.
  3. 3Every note is now a marker at its frame; a note on a stretch becomes a marker with a duration.

Colours that mean something

Markers are coloured by track: general notes blue, visual purple, text yellow, audio cyan, suggested edits red and notes already done green. A glance along the timeline shows where the sound or picture notes cluster.

Mark them done and send them back

Turn a marker green when it is dealt with. Export the timeline's markers as an EDL and use Import done markers on post-prod.io: the matching notes tick off, and the reviewer sees what changed.

Questions

Does it work with the free version of DaVinci Resolve?

Yes. Importing and exporting timeline markers as an EDL is part of Resolve itself, free or Studio; nothing to install.

Why are some markers red?

Red markers are suggested edits (a cut, a zoom, a blur and so on), so you can tell them apart from plain notes. Notes already dealt with come in green.
